Four games were played last night, while three were postponed due to heavy storms rolling across Northern Virginia (Northish?).

You know that old saying about baseball? The one that says that on any given night you might see something you’ve never seen before? Take a look at two of those New Market hitters down below, and I don’t mean the hitter of the day, either.

Let’s take a look:

Results

  • Charlottesville 4, Harrisonburg 1 (Tom Sox remain a half game behind Covington; Turks now 1.5 games behind Staunton for 4th place in the South)
  • Covington 8, Waynesboro 5 (Jacks a half game in first place; Generals 3 behind Jacks, 1 ahead of Staunton for 3rd place)
  • Winchester 7, Woodstock 2 (8 innings) (Royals 4 games ahead of Strasburg with 6 to play, one game behind New Market; Bandits need to win all 5 of their remaining games to finish ahead of 2009 Rockbridge Rapids)
  • New Market 9, Purcellville 2 (Rebels 3 games off the pace, but 1 ahead of Winchester for 3rd; Cannons still lead the North by 1 game)
  • Strasburg at Front Royal doubleheader postponed
  • Winchester at Woodstock game 2 postponed

Hitter of the Day

Andrew Eyster Santa Fe 2018

For the fourth time this season, it’s Andrew Eyster, from New Market and Santa Fe. Andrew went 2-5 last night, with 2 runs, 4 RBIs, a double, and a home run. His two extra base hits win the day. Andrew is still crushing the league; he’s hitting 421/513/779 in 95 at-bats for the Rebels.

Others of Note

  • Benny Serrano, Covington: 2-4, 3 RBIs, 2B
  • JD Mundy, Covington: 3-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs
  • Alex Webb, Waynesboro: 2-4, 2 RBIs, BB
  • Marcus Ragan, Waynesboro: 1-3, run, RBI, BB, HBP, SB
  • Kirby McMullen, Charlottesville: 3-4
  • Austin Embler, Harrisonburg: 3-4, run, RBI, HR
  • Aaron Palensky, Winchester: 3-4, run, 2 RBIs, 2 2B
  • Shaggy Freeland, Purcellville: 2-2, 2 BB, 2B
  • Marc Coffer, New Market: 1-2, 2 runs, RBI, 2 BB, 3 SB

AND an amazing performance by two Rebels:

  • Kobe Lopez: 1-1, 2 runs, 4 WALKS, SB; Kobe went from 317/404/373 to 323/424/378.
  • Chase Sudduth: 0-0, 5 WALKS; Chase’s OBP went up 20 points (to .489), while his batting average (.352) and slugging percentage (.552) stayed exactly the same. I don’t think I’ve seen a VBL game in which someone walked 5 times!

Pitcher of the Day

This section is incomplete. Woodstock’s boxscores have been having issues lately, and last night, it sure seems like Winchester’s Ryan Kennedy and Woodstock’s Kole Harris had good games, but the “innings pitched” line in the boxscore shows everyone threw exactly zero innings. I can’t imagine Jimmy McCumber appreciates hearing from me every day, so, sorry guys; we’ll have to just mention you in this way.

The pitcher of the day is therefore Charlottesville’s Cameron Weinberger, from Eastern Cam Weinberger Charlottesville 2018Florida State College enroute to Florida Charleston Southern. Cameron (I keep stopping myself from typing “Caspar”) threw 4 shutout innings against the Turks while allowing 2 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 4. He is now 4-0, 2.80, with 20 K’s in 25 1/3 summer innings.

Others of Note

  • Gio Soto, Waynesboro: 3 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K’s
  • Hunter Gregory, Charlottesville: 4 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K’s
  • Matthew Mercer, New Market: 2 2/3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K’s, win
