There’s hitting well, and then there’s mashing. What Orlando Olivera is doing for Missouri Baptist this season definitely qualifies as mashing.
The junior outfielder is hitting 430/451/631 after 39 games and 149 at-bats, with 31 runs, 64 hits, 15 doubles, 5 home runs, 38 RBIs, and 7 stolen bases (with 0 caught stealing). His BB/K ratio is a sterling 9/7. (Only 7 strikeouts in 149 at-bats? That’s crazy!) For batters who are regulars, Orlando leads the Spartans in batting average, slugging percentage, hit, doubles, RBIs, and total bases. He also won American Midwest Conference player of the week in consecutive weeks back in February.
See what I mean? He’s mashing.
Back in 2012, Orlando played for the Luray Wranglers. ATVL named him the #13 hitter in the league after he went 356/415/569 in 160 at-bats, with 10 doubles, 8 home runs, and a 15/20 BB/K ratio.
Congratulations on the superb start, Orlando!
