Thomas Smith 2014 Ga TechThomas Smith played for the Harrisonburg Turks in 2013, and put up a fantastic 341/428/492 slash line in 132 at-bats. He had a ridiculous 22/15 BB/K ratio as well. Put that together, and he was named ATVL’s #2 hitter in the league, behind only Jordan Tarsovich from Strasburg.

Well, Thomas is hitting very well for Georgia Tech in his junior year right now, too. Through April 20, Thomas is hitting 324/414/407 in 145 at-bats, with a 16/14 BB/K ratio. He’s second on the team in batting average, and first in on-base percentage.

But did you know that Thomas was originally a walk-on at Georgia Tech? This is what Coach Hall had to say about Thomas on his team profile at Tech: “The kid’s an unsung hero and a great story. You can’t get him off the field. He walked on here, and has been a big part of our team over the last two years. He’s a great defensive player and clutch hitter.”

In 2012, as a freshman, Thomas hit 302/407/349 in 39 games, along with a 15/14 BB/K ratio. The next year, he hit 286/362/446, with a 13/16 BB/K mark in 45 games. Then he played in the Valley, and tore it up!

I am excited to see if Thomas will be drafted this June. It seems to me than middle infielders that can control the strike zone will be in short supply!
