Due to some significant roster shuffling at the major league level and the subsequent chain reaction, Ryan Schimpf (Luray 2008) has been called up to Triple-A Buffalo!
Ryan, the Blue Jay’s 5th round draft pick in 2009, was tearing it up so far at Double-A New Hampshire in 2013. He was hitting 322/459/661 in his first 17 games, with a whopping 8 doubles and 4 home runs in only 59 at-bats. He’s played two games in Triple-A so far, going 1-8 with a home run and 2 walks.
Ryan is somewhat of a sleeper prospect in the Jay’s system. He can play multiple positions adequately (left field, third base, and second base), and he obviously has some pop at the plate. He hit 23 home runs in Double-A in 2013, and 22 in 2012 at two different levels.
I just heard on a podcast about the second base woes of the Blue Jays. Ryan Goins is off to a terrible start, Maicer Izturis hasn’t been much better, and the team has just turned to Chris Getz to be the possible answer. Well, honestly, if Chris Getz is the answer, you may want to take a look at the question. All this to say- why not give Schimpf a shot? He may just be the bat the Blue Jays are looking for.
