Stephen Kohlscheen (Harrisonburg 2010), a 45th round draft pick in 2010 by the Seattle Mariners, is crushing the opposition so far this year for Double-A Jackson. In 19 2/3 innings, Stephen is 1-1, 1.37, with 2 saves, only 1 walk, and 21 strikeouts.
In fact, Stephen’s strikeout rates spiked when he moved to the bullpen full time in 2012. That year, he struck out 91 batters in 70 innings. The next year, in 2013, he struck out 85 in 66 2/3 innings.
His walk rate has declined over the past three seasons, too, from 4.6 BB/9 in 2012, to 3.4 in 2013, and a ridiculous 0.5 in 2014.
It will be fun to watch Stephen this year to see where he ends up. A 6 foot 6 righty who strikes out 21 batters and only walks 1 can’t be too far away from the major leagues!
