Ben Verlander is best known, probably, for his older brother Justin. Around these parts, however, he’s known because he played in Strasburg in 2011 and Staunton in 2012. A 14th round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers in 2013, Ben spent his draft year in the New York-Penn League, with the Connecticut Tigers (I wonder if anyone has ever seen a tiger in Connecticut? Is there a zoo?).
This season, Ben was assigned to West Michigan in the Midwest League to start the year, but was then sent back down to Connecticut when the short season minor league team began its schedule.
Ben was already hitting very well back in Connecticut, but last night, he had a career game for sure. He went to bat six times, and went 4-5, with 2 singles, 2 home runs, a walk, scored 4 times, and drove in 7 runs! Now, after 10 games in Connecticut, Ben is hitting 342/432/526 in 38 at-bats.
Sure seems like Ben is making a case for returning to the Midwest League!
