All four game “ones” of the best-of-three quarterfinal matchups were played last night. The Turks and the Generals held serve as the higher seed, while the Braves and Cardinals find themselves in an elimination game tonight, and on the road to boot.
Here’s what happened:
- Waynesboro 8, Aldie 6: In a game that featured 29 total hits, the Generals’ Eugene Vazquez hit three singles, scored once and drove in four runs to help the Generals take a 1-0 lead over the Senators. Ten total players had at least two hits in this one, including three each for Vazquez and Kyle Pitts for Waynesboro, and Tremayne Toorie and Patrick Wright for Aldie. Wright hit a home run as well, his 2nd in two games- he hit a crucial home run in Aldie’s 17-12 win over Winchester on Monday. Jeff Schank got the win for the Generals, and Will Lowman closed it out with a solid 9th inning. Chad Martin was saddled with the loss. Game two is tonight at Aldie.
- Harrisonburg 3, Covington 1: The story of this game is pretty clearly the Turks’ Ryan Castellenos. Ryan dominated this game, throwing 8 shutout innings while allowing only 3 hits, walking none, and striking out 10 to earn the win. Brett Morgan finished off the game by pitching the 9th for the Turks, while earning the save. Matt Rose drove in 2 of the Turks’ 3 runs, while Daniel Nichols scored 2 of them. Nolan Krivijanski threw well for the Jacks, but was given the loss. Grant McKown had 2 hits and scored the Lumberjacks’ only run. Game two is tonight at Covington.
- Charles Town 14, Staunton 6: The Cannons and Braves held a slugfest last night, which should surprise no one- both teams have very good lineups. The Cannons held a 7-1 lead after batting in the 2nd inning, but the Braves fought back to 7-6, until Charles Town exploded with 7 runs in the top of the 9th inning. Andy Yacyk hit a big home run and drove in 4 runs for Cannons, and Stephen Kerr and Bryant Munoz each had 3 hits for the winners. Hunter Thomas had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, and 3 RBIs for the Braves, while Elliott McCummings was on base a whopping 5 times. Tyler Dearden earned the win with 5 shutout relief innings for the Cannons, while Tyler Zombro received the loss for the Braves. Game 2 is in Charles Town tonight.
- Strasburg 4, Front Royal 3: The Express, down 3-0 going into the 6th inning, scored four times thanks to 3 Cardinal errors, along with hits by Sky Overton and Joe Camp. The Express then held on, thanks to 4 2/3 shutout relief innings thrown by Braden Riddle, who earned the win. Jake Harper got the loss, even though none of the 4 runs he gave up were earned. Game two will be held in Strasburg tonight.
