Cory Spangenberg San DiegoFormer Winchester Royal (2010) and Valley League MVP Cory Spangenberg, finally healthy, made his major league debut for the San Diego Padres last night!

Cory was a first round draft pick, 10th overall, in the 2011 draft. He exploded on the pro ball scene, hitting 316/419/418 over two levels in his debut season. In 2012, at Lake Elsinore of the California League, Cory hit 271/324/352 in 384 at-bats.

In 2013, back at Lake Elsinore for 54 games and at Double-A San Antonio for 76, Cory hit a combined 292/346/407 in 513 at-bats. In 2014, Cory has played at three different levels, mainly because of rehab assignments to recover from a concussion. He was sent to Double-A again when he was fully healthy, and he took off, hitting 331/365/470 in 281 at-bats for San Antonio.

And then, the transaction- the San Diego Padres purchased his contract from Double-A! Cory got the start at third base last night, and made two excellent defensive plays, and also rolled his first major league hit into right field, scoring two in the 5th inning. The Padres won 3-1, so his 2 RBIs were rather important.

This is why we do this, right? A big congratulations to Cory for making it!
