Matt O'Neil Rhode Island headshotMatt O’Neil is not unlike many players who come to the Valley.

After his senior year at East Longmeadow in Massachusetts, Matt was named All-State first team at shortstop by ESPN Boston. He signed on to play at Connecticut, but did not play his freshman year. He transferred to Rhode Island for 2014, but had to sit out- I’m assuming because of transfer rules.

So O’Neil came to Covington just needing to play. He needed at-bats to knock the rust off and prepare for his 2015 season.

Well, he surely made the most of the opportunity, hitting for average and power all the way to the #13 hitter of the year, as named by All Things Valley League.

Matt hit 315/363/510 for the ‘Jacks, along with 21 runs, 45 hits, 10 doubles, 6 home runs, and 23 RBIs in 143 at-bats. He had a 11/26 BB/K ratio, and added 4 stolen bases. He added another home run in the playoffs. His 6 regular season home runs tied for 2nd in the league, and his slugging percentage was 7th.

Congratulations on your excellent year, Matt!
