Our #11 hitter in the 2014 season is our first, but not last, member on this list from the Front Royal Cardinals: Shell McCain, currently a junior at Tennessee Wesleyan. Well, I think he’s a junior in baseball terms, but the Front Royal roster has him listed as a senior.
At any rate, Shell had a fantastic summer for the Cardinals. He hit 333/406/487 in 156 at-bats, with 33 runs, 52 hits, 12 doubles, 4 home runs, 34 RBIs, 20 stolen bases, and an excellent 21/29 BB/K ratio. His batting average was 12th in the league, and his RBI total was 4th. In the playoffs, Shell went 4-12 in 3 games.
Shell’s been a bit of a sojourner in his college career so far. He played for North Carolina in 2012, and hit 235/311/346 in only 81 at-bats. For the next year, he played at Spartanburg Methodist, where he hit .340 in 45 games, along with 3 home runs, 49 RBIs, 27 runs, and 8 stolen bases. I was unable to track down stats for 2014 (perhaps he had to sit out because of a transfer? Maybe he took a year off?). Now he’s listed at Tennessee Wesleyan for the 2015 season.
Shell was one of the reasons the Cardinals had such a successful year in 2014- congratulations, and good luck at Wesleyan!
