Almost to the top!

All Things Valley League’s #2 hitter for the 2014 season is none other than Winchester’s Jerry Downs, a current junior at St. Thomas University!
Obviously, Jerry tattooed the ball all summer for the Royals. He hit 355/476/497, with 30 runs, 55 hits, 7 doubles, 5 home runs, 25 RBIs, and an excellent 33/24 BB/K in 155 at-bats. He also stole 15 bases in 16 attempts. In the league, he finished tied for 3rd in batting average, tied for 3rd in hits, 8th in home runs, 4th in total bases (with 77), 8th in slugging percentage, and 2nd in OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage). He left the league with a bang: he went 4-5, with 3 runs, 2 RBIs, a stolen base and a hit-by-pitch in his last game of the summer, the epic 17-12 loss against Aldie on July 27th. (He raised his batting average 15 points with just that game!)
Jerry has also hit very well at NAIA St. Thomas. As a freshman in 2013, he hit 278/410/333, with 4 doubles, a triple, a home run, and a 24/25 BB/K ratio in 162 at-bats. He improved quite a bit for his sophomore year, hitting 335/455/494 in 176 at-bats, along with 11 doubles, a triple, 5 home runs, 50 RBIs, 26/34 BB/K ratio, and 17 stolen bases in 18 attempts.
Watch for Mr. Downs to improve yet again for his junior year, and hopefully, start a pro career next summer!
