Continuing to slowly celebrate the top players in the 2014 Valley League season, today we have the #8 reliever, Harrisonburg’s Luke Scherzer, the 6-foot righthander from Virginia Tech.
Luke was more of a long reliever for the Turks, as he pitched in 20 2/3 innings in only 8 games (and he got started late, too- his first game in the Valley League was on June 27th). Overall, he went 3-0, 2.17, with a .211 opponent’s batting average, 1.159 WHIP, 3.5 BB/9, and 9.1 K/9. He struck out 21 batters in those 20 innings. He also threw 2 shutout innings in the playoffs.
Luke, a sophomore at Tech, was used quite a bit in his freshman year, when he went 2-2, 4.05, with 5 saves in 40 innings pitched. He gave up 39 hits, 16 walks, and struck out 25, while allowing a .257 opponent’s batting average.
