Time to catch up on all the open tabs in my browser. Here are some links to Valley League stories over the past few weeks….

  • Scott Copeland (Staunton 2007) made his major league debut a few weeks ago. This is a story by John Sickels explaining who, exactly, Scott is. (But we know!)
  • One of the cool things about the Valley League is the relationships that are built between teams and college programs. This article explains the relationship between the Turks and Oklahoma City.
  • Collegiate Summer Baseball Rankings: week one. Staunton is #7. (The whole process doesn’t mean much, really- how do you compare the Cape Cod League with any other league?)
  • David Carpenter (Covington 2004), off a couple excellent seasons for the Atlanta Braves, was released by the Yankees. (Patience, anyone?) He was designated for assignment, and eventually traded to the Nationals.
  • This article is a fun little read- Taylor Davis, current pitching coach for the Staunton Braves, also played for the Braves, and was a batboy for the Braves back when he was a young boy. As far as I know, this trifecta has never been done. I had a nice conversation with Taylor Sunday night, in fact.
  • Here is an article on the VBL website on Winchester’s Zac Carter, who has been annihilating VBL pitching this year!
  • This is a fun blog post about going to see the Staunton Braves play….
  • John Williams (Haymarket 2012) signed a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Rays!
  • Erik Kratz (Waynesboro 2000, Harrisonburg 2001) signed with the Boston Red Sox….
  • Has anyone else noticed what Will Harris (Staunton 2003) has been doing for the Houston Astros this year? A waiver wire pickup in the offseason, Will is 4-0, 0.80, with 10 hits, 9 walks, and 37 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings pitched in the major leagues this year. Those stats are incredible. There has been quite the renaissance in the majors for the Valley League this year….
