Three bits of news have come across my screen in the last couple days….
- The Woodstock River Bandits have named a new head coach- Kyle Ward, who played in New MArket in 2012 and coached in Aldie in 2015. Ward is currently the pitching coach for Florence-Darlington Technical College, a community college in South Carolina. He replaces Phil Betterly. Click here to read the Northern Virginia Daily piece.
- Movement of franchises always shocks me, and this one is no different: The Charles Town Cannons have moved to Purcellville, Virginia. According to the team’s Facebook page, the franchise will play its games at Fireman’s Field in downtown Purcellville. I would be interested in hearing more about why the team has moved. I heard an unsubstantiated rumor that it was because of lack of fan support in Charles Town, but, as I wrote already, I can’t substantiate that.
- In another shocker, the Aldie Senators will not field a team in 2016. A commenter posted on the Senators Facebook page that it was difficult to get volunteers, so that may have had something to do with the decision. Commissioner Don Lemish says that the league will go ahead with 11 teams next season. The North Division will be Front Royal, Purcellville, Woodstock, Strasburg, Winchester, and New Market. The South will be Harrisonburg, Waynesboro, Staunton, Charlottesville, and Covington.
