This is an odd one- my cutoff for this list is three seasons in the major leagues in which pitchers qualified for the ERA title (162 innings pitched). Not a single pitcher has qualified for even ONE ERA title since the 2006 draft, although Chad Kuhl (New Market 2012) came close in 2017 (157 innings).
So we’ll jump directly to the all-time list…. for which there are 6 qualifiers…
| All-Time | |||
| 1 | Jimmy Key | Winchester ’80 | 3.51 |
| 2 | Rick Honeycutt | Charlottesville ’73 | 3.72 |
| 3 | Mike Caldwell | Charlottesville ’68 | 3.81 |
| 4 | Tom Browning | New Market ’80-81 | 3.94 |
| 5 | Greg Hibbard | Staunton | 4.05 |
| 6 | Mike Maroth | Staunton ’96-97 | 5.05 |
What have we discovered? Well, it’s pretty special to have a pitcher throw 162+ innings in the major leagues. In fact, there were only 58 pitchers in the majors who reached that level in 2017.
