Our next three former VBLers who have had (or continue to have) excellent college seasons are Simon Landry (Strasburg 2017), Brooks Crawford (Charlottesville 2016), and Ray Hernandez (Purcellville 2016-17)!

  • Simon Landry set Pearl River’s single season and career home run records this season, when he hit 392/447/830, with 51 runs, 68 RBIs, 16 doubles, 1 triple, 19 home runs, and a 15/37 BB/K ratio. He led his team in hits, home runs, RBIs, batting average, and slugging percentage. He was second in runs and doubles. I believe that Pearl River was just eliminated in the JUCO District Championships. Simon has signed to play at Houston in 2019.
  • Brooks Crawford has been an important arm for the Clemson Tigers this season. He’s gone 8-2, 3.45, with a 1.110 WHIP, 1.7 BB/9, and 6.8 K/9 in 70 1/3 innings pitched. He leads his team in wins and BB/9.
  • Ray Hernandez was thisclose to signing a pro contract with the Diamondbacks last summer, but chose to come back to Alabama State for his senior year. I imagine his coach is pleased with that decision, as Ray hit 379/452/601 in 50 games and 203 at-bats, with 46 runs, 77 hits, 12 doubles, 11 home runs, 45 RBIs, a 20/31 BB/K ratio, and even 20 stolen bases in 22 attempts. He led the Hornets in hits, home runs, stolen bases, average, and slugging. He was second in runs, doubles, RBIs, and on-base percentage. (And he already held the school record for home runs (16) and RBIs (62) in a single season before 2018.) Alabama State’s season ended yesterday, so now Ray waits until the draft!
