Well, the 2025 MLB Draft is officially in the books. Because of extenuating circumstances, I was able to do my research during the draft this year, instead of all at the end (which is much easier!).

The process: I have a database with every single player who has appeared in the VBL since 1994. As the draft picks come in, I literally check every single drafted college player to see if they appear in the database, and because of all the transfers that happen now, I sometimes have to search for information on the player if, say, the name matches but the school does not. (That happened many times today.)

The other thing to note is that my database does not include the 2025 VBL players. So if there were any of those guys drafted today, they aren’t on my list- and I would love to hear about it so I can add them.

I am also incredibly human, so it’s possible I may have missed one or more players from before 2025 as well. Just fire me a heads up!

So here we go-

  • In all, 30 players were drafted- 4 fewer than last year, and 3 fewer than 2023…
  • Charlottesville bagged 9, Purcellville 5, Staunton and Culpeper got 3, Winchester, Woodstock, Covington and Front Royal all had 2, and Harrisonburg, Strasburg and New Market had 1. Looking for the missing team? It’s Waynesboro. (And the total is 31 if you add them up- because Ethan Walker played for both New Market and Purcellville in 2022. They both get to claim him.). This marks the third year in a row in which Charlottesville has the most (or tied for the most) drafted players…
  • The 2023 Charlottesville squad bagged seven draftees on its own…
  • Brian Curley is both the first and second draft picks in Culpeper history…
  • Jaxon Dalena is the highest draft pick in Purcellville history (6th round)…
  • From 2017 to 2023, the league did not produce a first round pick, but has five first round draft picks in the past three years. Three of them are from Charlottesville (Wyatt Langford, Trey Yesavage, and Zach Root). Can anyone name the other two, along with the VBL team they played for?

Ok, I’ve got to hang it up tonight.
