According to All Things Valley League, the 15th best hitter in the league in 2014 is none other than Staunton’s Hunter Thomas, a rising senior from Georgia Southern. Hunter hit 348/400/436 for the Braves, with 23 runs, 40 hits, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 home run, and 13 RBIs in 115 at-bats. He had a solid 14/24 BB/K ratio, and added 10 stolen bases. He was named the player of the week in the Valley League on June 20th, and came in 5th in the league in batting average. He had an excellent season!
Hunter hasn’t received a ton of playing time at Georgia Southern over his three years so far, but that hasn’t stopped him from getting on base at a very good clip. As a freshman in 2012, he hit 221/344/273 in 77 at-bats. He played in only six games as a sophomore because of injury (he ended with a 273/360/409 line). Then, in 2014, as a junior, Hunter hit 257/382/366 in 101 at-bats, with 8 doubles, a home run, 17 RBIs, and a 22/42 BB/K ratio.
I am very interested to see how Hunter uses his success in the Valley this summer- I think he may really take off as a senior!
