Everything That Happened, Sunday July 17

All five games were played last night, with an appropriate amount of craziness. Let’s take a look…

Results

Covington 9, Charlottesville 8 (Jacks score THREE in the bottom of the 9th to walk off. Brandon Vicens tied it with a 2-run double, and Bruce Martin drove in Vicens with a sac fly to win it. Jacks solidify hold on 3rd place in South, while Tom Sox stay 1.5 games behind Staunton for the last playoff spot in the South.)

Winchester 10, Front Royal 3 (Royals score 5 times on 3 hits and 2 errors in the 5th inning. Winchester now has a 3-game lead over the Cardinals for 2nd position in the North, with only 7 to play. Front Royal still is ahead of New Market (in 4th place) by 2 games, also with 7 to play.)

Purcellville 3, New Market 2 (Cannons’ Denathan Dukes scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th to win it. Purcellville pulls to within one game of the Rebels for the last playoff spot in the North.)

Waynesboro 11, Woodstock 9 (12 innings) (Play-by-play is not available for this one, but I can tell you that Kyle Jackson hit a 2-run home run in the top of the 12th to win it. Gens stay a half game ahead of the Turks for 1st place in the South, and poor Woodstock is 4.5 games behind the last playoff spot in the North, with 8 games to play.)

Harrisonburg 6, Staunton 5 (Tanner Dofflemyer scored on a Bryan Arias fielder’s choice in the bottom of the 9th to win it. A walk-off fielder’s choice! My hunch is that Staunton tried to turn an inning-ending double play, but Arias beat the throw to first. Turks stay a half game behind Waynesboro for 1st place in the South, and Staunton falls 6 games behind 3rd place, but stay 1.5 ahead of Charlottesville for the last playoff spot.)
