Everything That Happened, Wednesday July 20

Five games last night, and tons more runs scored. Let’s take a snapshot of the evening:


Purcellville 7, Charlottesville 2 (Thanks to Tyler Ratliff’s 2 home runs and 5 RBIs, the Cannons draw into a tie with New Market for the last playoff spot in the North. Both teams have 5 games to play. The Tom Sox, with 7 games to play, are 2 games behind Staunton for the last playoff spot in the South- and they play tonight!)

Strasburg 12, New Market 6 (6-6 tie going into the bottom of the 8th, and the Express explode for 6 runs to run away with this one. As mentioned above, the Rebels fall into a tie for the last playoff spot in the North. Strasburg has almost clinched the North division title.)

Waynesboro 14, Covington 3 (The Generals score 13 runs over the 3rd-6th innings. Seven games left, and the Generals have a 2 game lead over the Turks for the South division title. The Jacks have clinched a top three finish in the South, and are 3.5 games behind the Turks for 2nd place.)

Woodstock 14, Staunton 8 (The Bandits hold off elimination for another day. The team is 4.5 games back of both Purcellville and New Market with 5 games to play. Staunton is still 2 games ahead of the Tom Sox for the last playoff spot in the South.)

Harrisonburg 4, Front Royal 0 (Three Turks hold the Cards to 4 singles and 0 runs. Turks are still 2 games behind Waynesboro for South title, Cards are still 3 games ahead of both New Market and Purcellville with 5 games to play.)

Hitter of the Day

Tanner Poole Miss St 2016Our hitter of the day almost literally did a little bit of everything for Waynesboro. It’s Tanner Poole, from Mississippi State, who went 3-4, with 4 runs scored, an RBI, a walk, double, triple, hit-by-pitch, and stolen base. Tanner has been productive all summer for the Generals. He’s now hitting 341/479/515 in 132 at-bats and 35 games, with 39 runs, 6 doubles, 4 triples, 3 home runs, 19 stolen bases, and a solid 25/33 BB/K ratio.

Ah, Harrisonburg and Wake Forest. This is the third combination of a Turk from Wake to win pitcher of theJohn McCarren Wake Forest 2016 day- this time it’s John McCarren (the first two were Donnie Sellers and Chris Farish). John threw 5 shutout innings last night, while allowing 2 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 4. He earned the win and a game score of 66. Over 6 games started this summer, John is 4-1, 3.70, with 28 hits, 9 walks, and 27 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched for the Turks.
