Continuing up the list, today we have the 7th best hitter in the 2016 Valley League season- Harrisonburg’s Tripp Shelton!
Tripp, from UNC Greensboro, hit 329/418/514 in 38 games and 146 at-bats, along with 35 runs scored, 24 RBIs, 10 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs, 3 stolen bases, and a 17/19 BB/K ratio for the Turks. He also went 3-3 in the all-star game, and then went 3-7, with 2 runs, a triple, and a home run in the playoffs. He was voted first team All-Valley League at shortstop at the end of the season. His best game was on June 17th at Charlottesville, when he went 4-4 with 2 runs, a double, 2 RBIs, and a hit-by-pitch. A month later, on July 22nd, he went 3-4 at Front Royal, with a home run, 3 RBIs, and another hit-by-pitch. Baseball America named him the 6th best prospect in the Valley League, and Perfect Game named him #9.
Currently a junior at Greensboro, Tripp has already been a 2-year starter for the Spartans (besides a stretch in which he was injured in 2016). In 2015, as a freshman, Tripp hit 252/314/367 in 139 at-bats, with 19 runs, 19 RBIs, 7 doubles, 3 home runs, and a 12/25 BB/K ratio.
The next year, he hit 357/428/543 in 129 at-bats, with 32 runs, 15 RBIs, 9 doubles, 3 triples, 3 home runs, 9 stolen bases (without being caught), and a 13/21 BB/K ratio. He was also named to the SoCon Honor Roll. Watch for another solid year this spring for the Spartans.
Congratulations on your excellent summer, Tripp!
