#8 Reliever: Mitch Stophel, Front Royal

mitch-stophel-king-headshotAnother back-to-back: our #8 reliever is Front Royal’s Mitch Stophel, coming in one place ahead of his teammate, Brandon Valentin!

Stophel, a 6-foot-3 righthander from Division-II King College (the Tornado!), was dynamite out of the ‘pen for the Cards in 2016. Overall, Mitch went 1-3, 2.14, with 1 save, a 1.024 WHIP, 4.6 BB/9, and 9.5 K/9 in 15 relief outings and 29 1/3 innings pitched.

Mitch was almost unhittable in the playoffs, going 1-0, 0.00 and 1 save in 2 games. He struck out 10 in 5 playoff innings! His best outing was when he threw 4 shutout innings against Strasburg on August 2nd.

He’s currently a senior at King. In 2014, as a freshman, he went 2-3, 8.04 in 8 games, 5 of them starts. He walked 18 and struck out 13 in 28 innings. As a sophomore, he improved to 3-1, 4.82, with 17 walks and 21 strikeouts in another 28 innings (weird). Then, as a junior in 2016, he went 1-0, 7.15 in 13 games out of the bullpen. He walked 19 and struck out 14 in 22 2/3 innings. Awesomely, he was named Academic All-Conference Carolinas in 2016.

Here’s to a blowout senior year, Mitch! Nice job for the Cardinals!
