Major league clubs are always on the lookout for power, which means that they should be scouting Trevin Esquerra, the 4th best hitter in the 2017 Valley League season.
Let’s take a look at his output in both the regular season and 3 playoff games:
| VBL | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | BB | K | SB | CS | Avg | OBP | SLG |
| 2017 | 38 | 152 | 25 | 55 | 11 | 3 | 8 | 33 | 11 | 46 | 0 | 0 | 0.362 | 0.407 | 0.632 |
| Play | 3 | 13 | 2 | 5 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 4 | 0 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0.385 | 0.385 | 0.923 |
Trevin finished 6th in batting average, 4th in OPS, 2nd in slugging percentage, 2nd in total bases (sorry Dave), tied for 5th in RBIs, 2nd in home runs, tied for 4th in triples, tied for 4th in doubles, and tied for 4th in hits. Wow- he’s in the top 5 in 8 different categories. Not surprisingly, he was named first team All-Valley at first base. He was named ATVL’s hitter of the day 4 times, with his best day probably being on June 9th at Winchester, when he went 4-5 with a run, 2 doubles, and an RBI. Perfect Game named him the 10th best prospect in the league as well.
Just a sophomore at Loyola Marymount (yet another freshman from the summer!), the 6-foot-1, 215 pound infielder from San Diego didn’t play a huge amount for the Lions in 2017:
| LM | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | BB | K | SB | CS | Avg | OBP | SLG |
| 2017 | 37 | 67 | 14 | 14 | 6 | 1 | 2 | 12 | 9 | 27 | 0 | 1 | 0.209 | 0.295 | 0.418 |
He showed power here, too, with 9 of his 14 hits going for extra bases. Hopefully he’ll get some more at-bats this spring.
Congratulations on your excellent summer, Trevin!
