2017 Rookie Level Pitcher of the Year

Next up in our top minor league players series, we have the top pitcher at the Rookie Level of the minor leagues. This player has been selected from the Pioneer, Appalachian, Gulf Coast, and Arizona Leagues.

First, the history:

2014- Trey Cochran-Gill (Harrisonburg 2012)

A 31st round draft pick in 2017, Keenan pitched 29 1/3 innings at the Giants’ Arizona League affiliate, and finished 4-0, 1.54, with 19 hits, 12 walks, and 34 strikeouts. His WHIP finished at 1.06, and he had a 3.7 BB/9 and 10.4 K/9. Pretty good for his first pro season!

  • Frank Rubio (Front Royal 2016), in the Arizona League: 1-0, 3.44 in 15 2/3 innings, 1.15 WHIP, 0.6 BB/9, 8.0 K/9
  • Abraham Almonte (Strasburg 2016), for Missoula in the Pioneer League: 1-0, 2.86 in 22 IP, 1.36 WHIP, 3.7 BB/9, 12.7 K/9
  • Randy Dobnak (Front Royal 2015), for Elizabethton in the Appalachian League: 2-0, 2.40 in 26 1/3 IP, 0.95 WHIP, 2.1 BB/9, 7.5 K/9
  • Tyler Howe (Waynesboro 2015-6), in the Gulf Coast League: 3-1, 1.57 in 23 IP, with a 1.17 WHIP, 5.1 BB/9, and 11.0 K/9 (Tyler’s been released already)
  • Nick Margevicius (Staunton 2015), in the Arizona League: 1-1, 1.42 in 19 IP, with a 1.21 WHIP, 1.9 BB/9, and 14.2 K/9
  • Colby Nealy (Strasburg 2015), combined in the Arizona League, and for Ogden in the Pioneer League: 2-1, 1.93 in 23 1/3 IP, with a 0.94 WHIP, 1.9 BB/9, and 8.5 K/9
  • James Ziemba (Harrisonburg 2014-5), at Orem of the Pioneer League: 5-0, 1.99, with a 1.23 WHIP, 3.7 BB/9, and 9.9 K/9
  • Tyler Zombro (Staunton 2014), combined in the Gulf Coast League and at Princeton in the Appalachian League: 0-0, 3.67 in 27 innings, with a 1.22 WHIP, 2.7 BB/9, and 8.0 K/9
