2017 Full Season A Pitcher of the Year

Next up is the full season A-ball pitcher of the year, taking from the ranks of the Midwest, South Atlantic, California, Carolina, and Florida State Leagues.

The past three years (all three of these look like good picks):

2016- James Reeves (Staunton 2013)
2015- Austin Gomber (Luray 2012)
2014- Chad Kuhl (New Market 2012)

Mike O'Reilly Palm BeachThe 2017 full season A-ball pitcher of the year is Mike O’Reilly (Woodstock 2014)! Mike was a pretty easy choice, as he dominated for both Peoria of the Midwest League, and Palm Beach of the Florida State League (he was a teammate of Shane Billings (Harrisonburg 2015) by the way).

In 24 games (21 starts) and 142 1/3 innings, Mike went 12-3, 2.34, with a 0.94 WHIP, 1.3 BB/9, and 8.4 K/9! He still isn’t showing up on prospect lists, but if he can perform anything close to this in Double-A, he’ll probably get all the attention he could want.

Mike threw the two best starts of any former Valley Leaguer in the minors in 2017. The first, on July 10, saw him fire a complete game shutout while allowing only 1 hit, 0 walks, and striking out 12. That one earned him a game score of 104. The second, on May 20, was eerily similar. He threw 8 1/3 shutout innings, while allowing 1 hit, 1 walk, and striking out 10 for a game score of 96.

Others to consider:

  • Sam Lewis (Woodstock 2011), for Kane County of the Midwest League and Visalia in the California League, went 4-6, 3.39 in 106 1/3 innings. He finished with a combined WHIP of 1.24, along with a 2.0 BB/9 and 8.6 K/9.
  • Dominic DeMasi (Staunton 2013), for Lynchburg of the Carolina League: 7-4, 2.58 in 101 innings, with a 1.06 WHIP, 2.0 BB/9, and 5.2 K/9
  • Logan Boyd (Charles Town 2013), combined at Greenville of the South Atlantic League and Salem of the Caorlina League: 11-5, 3.42 in 137 innings, with a 1.24 WHIP, 3.3 BB/9, and 7.4 K/9
  • Jack Charleston (Charles Town 2014) for Winston-Salem: 2-1, 2.18, 9 saves in 33 innings, 1.15 WHIP, 4.1 BB/9, 4.9 K/9
