Last night saw one postponement (at Charlottesville), a lightning delay (at Harrisonburg), and perhaps one of the best hitting performances the league has ever seen… or at least the best in the last decade or so…

  • Waynesboro at Charlottesville postponed
  • Winchester 5, Front Royal 3
  • Purcellville 15, Strasburg 5
  • New Market 11, Woodstock 2
  • Harrisonburg 5, Covington 1

Hitter of the Day

Well, duh.

This is the best overall performance in a Valley League game in the last 5 seasons for sure, and perhaps longer.

Luke Berryhill Walters State CC 2018Purcellville’s Luke Berryhill, who hustled into town during the day, made his VBL debut a rather memorable one. In the first inning, with the bases loaded, he was hit by a pitch. In the 3rd inning, he hit a 2-run home run. In the 7th, he hit two home runs, a 3-run shot first, and then a grand slam second. Overall, he went 3-5, with a hit-by-pitch, 3 runs, 3 home runs, and 10 RBIs. In one game, he leapt to the top of the league leaderboard in both home runs (3 guys have 2) and RBIs (3 guys have 7).

Luke played for Walters State CC in 2018, where he hit 376/528/759 in 52 games, with 11 doubles, 13 home runs, 58 runs, 45 RBIs, and a 38/38 BB/K ratio. He is committed to South Carolina for 2019.

Wow! Way to go, Luke!

(For the record, New Market’s John Cable hit 3 home runs on July 2nd, 2016, but he drove in “only” 6 runs).

Others of Note

  • Kenny Oyama, Purcellville: 3-4, 3 runs, 2 BB, 2B
  • Shaggy Freeland, Purcellville: 2-3, 2 runs, RBI, BB, 2B
  • Justin Hayes, Strasburg: 2-5, run, 2 RBIs, BB, SB
  • Justin King, New Market: 4-4, 2 runs, 3B, HR, 3 RBIs (would be the winner on a different day)

Pitcher of the Day

Our POD, with a game score of 66, is Kyle Arjona, from Harrisonburg and New Orleans!Kyle Arjona New Orleans 2018 Kyle threw all 7 innings (the game ended early) against Covington, allowing 6 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, and striking out 6. It was his first appearance this summer. For the Privateers, he went 4-5, 4.68 in 65 1/3 innings pitched.

Others of Note

  • Kobe Foster, Front Royal: 5 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K’s
  • Trey Shepard, Purcellville: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 7 BB, 8 K’s
  • Nicholas Cottone, New Market: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Tonight’s Games

  • New Market at Purcellville
  • Front Royal at Strasburg
  • Harrisonburg at Waynesboro
  • Staunton at Covington
  • Winchester at Woodstock

  1. As a caviat to the story about Luke Berryhill, he and John Cable played on the same high school team, River Ridge in Woodstock Georgia.

    • Further on Cable’s 3-home run game at Harrisonburg, he hit, in sequence: solo, 2-run, and 3-run homers. The Rebels family was pulling mightily for John to hit for a home-run cycle.

  2. Luke Berryhill’s VBL arrival was more like an invasion than a debut. Those 7 RBI in an inning likely a VBL record (but the long-term record book is lost in the mists of time). Still, we like the totality and numerical elegance of New Market’s Jacob Rhinesmith’s 6-for-6, 2 2B, 6 RBI, 3 runs game at Strasburg, July 15, 2017. Jacob just finished a season at Western Kentucky (OF), and was drafted by the Nationals, 18th round, #551.
