On This Valley League Day (June 26)

We’re doing two today:

  • On this day in 2013, Woodstock’s Kyri Washington went 4-5, with 3 runs and 2 RBIs. Kyri participated in the Home Run Derby in the ’13 All-Star game, and then went on to be picked by the Boston Red Sox in the 23rd round of the 2015 draft (he was rumored to go much higher, but didn’t have a super year for Longwood, even though he hit 15 home runs). Kyri had a 3-home run day in early May for Salem in the Carolina League, and is currently on a rehab assignment in the minors.
  • Also on this day but in 2015, Harrisonburg’s James Ziemba, from Duke, threw 5 no-hit innings, walking 2 and striking out 1 against Winchester. James went on to be drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in 2017, and is currently at Burlington in the Midwest League. He’s 1-1, 2.79, with 4 saves, a 1.38 WHIP, and 18 walks and 30 strikeouts in 42 innings pitched.
