Justin Showalter JMU headshot 2018Local player alert!

Our 13th best starter in the 2018 Valley League season is a Hinton, Virginia native, a Turner Ashby High School graduate, and a current player for James Madison- Justin Showalter!

Justin, a 6-2, 180 pound righthanded sophomore for the Dukes, was quite good for the Staunton Braves this summer. (He even got some nibbles for ATVL’s top prospect list, although he ultimately was not listed.) Here are his stats:

Stan ERA W L G GS IP H R ER BB K BAVG WIP BB/9 K/9
2018 3.42 3 1 12 5 42.0 40 22 16 13 30 0.244 1.262 2.8 6.4

Among pitchers surveyed for this list, Justin finished 1st in innings pitched, and 9th in BB/9, with only 13 walks in 42 innings pitched. His best start was on July 10th at Charlottesville, when he threw 8 complete innings while allowing 5 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, and struck out 2. He earned a game score of 69 for that one. He was also named pitcher of the day twice throughout the season. When the Braves fell short of the VBL playoffs, he headed North to play for the Orleans Firebirds of the Cape Cod League, where he logged another 5 1/3 innings.

Here are his freshman stats for JMU:

JMU ERA W L G GS IP H R ER BB K WHIP BB/9 K/9
2018 7.24 0 0 9 0 13.7 16 12 11 2 11 1.314 1.3 7.2

Congratulations on your excellent summer, Justin!
