2018 Full Season A Pitcher of the Year

Next up is the full season A-ball pitcher of the year, taking from the ranks of the Midwest, South Atlantic, California, Carolina, and Florida State Leagues. But as usual, the history first:

2017- Mike O’Reilly (Woodstock 2014)
2016- James Reeves (Staunton 2013)
2015- Austin Gomber (Luray 2012)
2014- Chad Kuhl (New Market 2012)
2013- Greg Nappo (Haymarket 2010)
2012- Drew Granier (Harrisonburg 2009-10)
2011- Tyler Thornburg (Winchester 2008)
2010- Frank Gailey (New Market 2005-06)

Walter Borkovich Rome 2018The 2018 Full Season A-ball Pitcher of the Year is Walter Borkovich (Staunton 2015)! Walter was ridiculous in his two stops: Rome in the South Atlantic League and Florida in the Florida State League. He pitched out of the bullpen for almost the whole season, and then abruptly started six times… and was spectacular in each of them. Combined at the two stops, Walter went 5-1, 1.47, with a 1.04 WHIP, 1.6 BB/9, and 5.9 K/9 in 85 2/3 innings pitched.

Signed as a nondrafted free agent out of Michigan State in 2017, Borkovich surely has opened some eyes in Atlanta’s system. He was serviceable for the Staunton Braves in the summer of ’15, going 4-3, 4.20, with a 1.186 WHIP, 2.4 BB/9, and 8.1 K/9 in 44 2/3 innings pitched.

Others to Consider:

  • Tyler Zombro (Staunton 2014): Pitching for Bowling Green in the Midwest League, Tyler went 8-2, 2.84, with a 1.16 WHIP, 1.0 BB/9, and 6.4 K/9 in 76 innings
  • Mike O’Reilly (Woodstock 2014): 2017’s winner, O’Reilly pitched in 13 games for High-A Palm Beach, going 2-1, 3.20, with a 1.04 WHIP, 2.1 BB/9, and 9.6 K/9 in 33 2/3 innings
  • Randy Dobnak (Front Royal 2015), pitching at Cedar Rapids: 10-5, 3.14, with a 1.26 WHIP, 1.7 BB/9, and 5.9 K/9 in 129 innings
  • Dominic LoBrutto (Winchester 2016), for Greenville: 3-0, 3.73, 1.24 WHIP, 2.3 BB/9, 11.4 K/9 in 50 2/3 innings
  • Nick Margevicius (Staunton 2015): Borkovich’s teammate in Staunton, Nick went 10-8, 3.60, with a 1.22 WHIP, 1.1 BB/9, and 9.7 K/9 in 135 innings at two levels- Fort Wayne in the Midwest League and Lake Elsinore in the California League. Nick was the Short Season A-Ball Pitcher of the Year in 2017.
  • Tad Ratliff (Charlottesville 2015): 2-0, 1.68, 10 saves, 1.14 WHIP, 1.9 BB/9, 9.9 K/9 in 48 1/3 innings at Lexington of the South Atlantic League.
  • JT Hintzen (Woodstock 2016): 3-1, 3.22, 1.16 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9, 10.2 K/9 in 36 1/3 innings at Wisconsin in his pro debut
