2018 Major League Hitter of the Year

This is the level that the subjects of allll the other posts wish to join. I had to pick one Valley League alumnus to be the hitter of the year, but just being mentioned on this list means everything in this world of competition.

So let’s take a look at the history of major league hitters of the year:

2017- Daniel Murphy (Luray 2004-05)
2016- Daniel Murphy (Luray 2004-05)
2015- Jason Kipnis (Covington 2006-07)
2014- Brett Gardner (New Market 2003-04)
2013- Jason Kipnis (Covington 2006-07)
2012- Jon Jay (Staunton 2004)
2011- Gaby Sanchez (Staunton 2003)
2010- Gaby Sanchez (Staunton 2003)

Murphy, Kipnis, and Sanchez all have two wins, with Jay and Gardner grabbing one.

Yonder Alonso headshot ClevelandWell, add another Luray Wrangler to the list, as the 2018 VBL Major League Hitter of the Year is Yonder Alonso (Luray 2006). Yonder played in 145 games for the Cleveland Indians while slashing 250/317/421, with 64 runs, 83 RBIs, 19 doubles, 23 home runs, and a 51/123 BB/K ratio. He was also the Triple-A Hitter of the Year all the way back in 2010.

Others to Consider:

  • Jon Jay (Staunton 2004): 268/330/347 in 143 games split between Kansas City and Arizona. He scored 74 runs, drove in 40, and hit 19 doubles, 7 triples, and 3 home runs.
  • Dan Murphy (Luray 2004-5): Struggled with injuries in ’18, slashed 299/336/454 in 91 games and 328 at-bats, with 15 doubles, 12 home runs, and a 20/40 BB/K ratio. He split his season between the Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals.
  • Jason Kipnis (Covington 2006-7), also for the Indians: 230/315/389, 65 runs, 75 RBIs, 28 doubles, 18 home runs, 60/112 BB/K ratio.
  • Brett Gardner (New Market 2003-4), for the Yankees: 236/322/368 in 530 at-bats, with 95 runs, 45 RBIs, 20 doubles, 7 triples, 12 home runs, 16 stolen bases, and a 65/107 BB/K ratio.
  • Tyler White (Haymarket 2010), for the Astros: 276/354/533 in 210 at-bats, with 27 runs, 42 RBIs, 12 doubles, 3 triples, 12 home runs, and a 24/49 BB/K ratio. I had to debate long and hard between Alonso and White…
