Sunday’s Games, Focus on Hart and Nicolas

Wow, what a day for former Valley Leaguers in Division I! We had three 4-hit games, one 5-hit game, a complete game shutout, shutout outings covering 8 innings, 7 innings, and 6 1/3 innings, two 2-home run games, and two 5 RBI games as well. The Valley League has several former players on the NCAA leaderboards… a post on that is hopefully coming pretty soon.

So for today, we’ll take a look at two former Tom Sox who had tremendous games yesterday (and haven’t been spotlighted before… that I can remember)- Charleston’s Dupree Hart (Charlottesville 2016) and Ball State’s Kyle Nicolas (Charlottesville 2018).

  • Hart, a senior second baseman, went 4-5 yesterday, with 3 runs, 2 home runs, and 5 RBIs. He’s now hitting 297/383/378 in 44 games and 172 at-bats, with 33 runs, 6 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 34 RBIs, an excellent 25/19 BB/K ratio, and 33 stolen bases in 39 attempts. He leads the Cougars in runs and stolen bases (and is on the NCAA leaderboard for steals as well).
  • Nicolas has been making waves with his big fastball- he’s been clocked at triple digits in this, his sophomore season. The 6-foot-3 righthander got a surprise start (to me, anyway) Sunday against Bowling Green, and came through with 7 shutout innings. He allowed 3 hits, walked 3, and struck out 11 to earn his second win. Kyle’s struggled with control a bit this year, but he’s also super hard to hit. After this performance, he’s 2-2, 4.82, with 6 saves, a 1.366 WHIP, 7.7 BB/9 and 14.5 K/9 in 41 innings pitched. He’s allowed only 21 hits and struck out 66 in those 41 innings.
