Hitter and Pitcher of the Day, Saturday, June 1

The second day of Valley League baseball saw an amazing comeback and some excellent stats from our pitching prospects!

Results

  • Woodstock 5, New Market 4- The Bandits scored 4 times in the bottom of the ninth to walk off on the Rebels in their home opener. With 2 outs, Tomas Sanchez singled in 2 runs to win it.
  • Strasburg 11, Purcellville 5- The Express scored 7 runs in the 7th to run away from the Cannons.
  • Covington 6, Staunton 3- The ‘Jacks scored 4 in the 7th inning, including an Easton Jones steal of home.
  • Front Royal 5, Winchester 3- The Cardinals got 5 shutout innings from three relievers- Brent McMillion, Trey Fields, and Trey Parr- to hang on to this one.
  • Waynesboro 6, Harrisonburg 1- Wes Clarke scored 3 runs and drove in one for the Generals to help the squad stay undefeated.

Hitter of the Day

In a close call, our hitter of the day is New Market’s Brady Harju, from JMU. Brady went 2-4 last night, with a run, double, home run, and 3 RBIs. He’s now 3-8 on the season so far. Brady was quite good for JMU this spring, hitting 295/358/469 in 207 at-bats, with 9 doubles, 9 home runs, and 43 RBIs. He led the Dukes in home runs and RBIs.

Pitcher of the Day

There were many good performances last night, but the best start was turned in by New Market’s Logan Morrison, from Concord, who threw 5 shutout innings while allowing 2 hits, 0 walks, and striking out 8. Logan, a local from Luray, earned a game score of 71 for his efforts. Logan, like Harju, was quite good at school this spring, putting up a 6-4, 4.53 line, with 52 strikeouts in 49 1/3 innings pitched.
