We’ve now reached the top three!

The #3 starter in the 2019 Valley League season is Harrisonburg’s Austin Koehn, the sophomore righthander front UNC Greensboro.

Koehn only started four games, but, obviously, all four of them were very good to excellent.

ERA W L G GS IP H R ER BB K B/AVG WHIP BB/9 K/9
2019 1.80 3 1 4 4 25.0 17 5 5 9 24 0.195 1.040 3.2 8.6

Koehn finished first in the league in ERA, fourth in batting average against, tied for second in WHIP, and tenth in BB/9 among pitchers considered for this list. He won Pitcher of the Day in two of the starts, both wins:

  • June 14 at Covington, when he fired seven shutout innings, allowing three hits, three walks, and striking out five
  • June 20 at New Market, six more shutout innings, four hits, two walks, nine strikeouts

And after the season, Koehn was named first team All-Valley League.

Part of the reason he didn’t stay too long is all the innings he pitched as a true freshman:

UNCG ERA W L G GS IP H R ER BB K WHIP BB/9 K/9
2019 3.49 4 3 15 14 77.3 67 33 30 22 67 1.151 2.6 7.8

He was named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team, and Pitcher of the Week on May 19. It certainly looks like he has a bright future!
