What happened in the Valley on May 31?
Hitter of the Day
On May 31, 2013, Waynesboro’s Tyler Bocock, from Stetson (and Turner Ashby High School, of course), went 3-5 against Staunton, with three runs scored, four RBIs, a triple, and a home run. That summer for the Generals, he hit .311/.391/.395 in 177 at-bats, with 10 doubles and nine stolen bases. Bocock spent 2012 at Chipola, and 2013-2015 at Stetson, where he hit .249/.328/.314 in 611 at-bats. Of course, he was an assistant coach for Woodstock in 2019, and has been playing in the RCBL- he was the league MVP in 2018, and finals MVP three years in a row- 2017 to 2019.
Pitcher of the Day
On May 31, 2013, Harrisonburg’s Jake Harper fired an exquisite seven innings against Covington, allowing only one hit, no runs, one walk, and striking out seven. From St. Joseph’s (Indiana), Harper went 2-3, 3.39 in 50 innings that summer. He came back in 2014, though, and did so well he was named the Pitcher of the Year, and ATVL named him the #2 starter in the league. At St. Joseph’s from 2013-2015, Harper went 8-7, 3.50 in 164 2/3 innings pitched. He did not pitch in pro ball, but is now an assistant coach at Webster University.
