And our Friday matchup!

  • Austin Koehn defeated Daniel Thorpe (Aldie) in the first round, 81% to 19% (42 votes). His writeup: “Austin Koehn was one of the stable of excellent Turk starters in 2019. He had just completed his freshman year at UNC Greensboro, in which he had struck out 67 batters in 77 innings. For Harrisonburg, he was the 3rd best starter in the league, going 3-1, 1.80, with a 1.040 WHIP, 3,2 BB/9, and 8.6 K/9 in 25 innings. In the abbreviated NCAA season in 2020, Koehn went 1-0, 1.04, with 19 K’s in 17 1/3 innings. If he has another excellent season in 2021, I envision Koehn hearing his name on draft day (one of the draft days, anyway).”
  • Jordan DeLorenzo was really, really good for Front Royal in 2013, just after his up-and-down sophomore season at West Florida. ATVL’s 2nd best starter in the league, DeLorenzo went 4-3, 1.69, with a 0.818 WHIP, 1.4 BB/9, and 9.8 K/9 in 58 2/3 innings- stats that most years would earn the #1 spot. (He walked nine, and struck out 64!) And then he went back to school, and did this: 11-1, 0.93, 0.89 WHIP, 2.1 BB/9, 8.1 K/9 in 87 innings. Unsurprisingly, he was picked in the 12th round of the draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He spent three years in pro ball, going a combined 4-4, 3.86 in 72 2/3 innings when he was released.
