While we continue to wait for the Nolan Arenado trade to be finalized (perhaps involving Austin Gomber), we have another former Valley Leaguer on the move- Luke Berryhill, who has been traded from the Cincinnati Reds to the Houston Astros.

Berryhill, who played for Purcellville in 2018, was a 13th round pick in the 2019 draft out of South Carolina (where, incidentally, Wes Clarke was his backup) by the Cincinnati Reds. In his limited pro debut that summer, Berryhill hit .240/.344/.400 in 25 at-bats for Rookie-Level Greeneville with a double and home run. He did not play in 2020. He has been traded for lefthander Cionel Perez, who will most likely battle for a relief spot in Cincinnati’s bullpen.

Berryhill is probably best known to Valley fans for his outburst on the very first day he played in the VBL; on June 8, 2018, Berryhill went 3-5 for the Cannons, with three home runs, 10 RBIs, and a hit-by-pitch. He only played in nine more games that summer, but his debut left a lasting impression.

And something else I’ve learned- Berryhill might just have a singing career after his playing days are over!
