I have to tell you, Brilliant Reader; my subscription to d1baseball.com is more and more useful as I search for former Valley Leaguers doing well in college. (Check it out- they run specials from time to time!)
The latest article to grab my attention is entitled D1 Analytics: Top 100 Draft-Eligible Pitchers, and is written by David Seifert. He uses analytics (surprise!) to rank college pitchers in three categories: zone control, pitch ability, and durability. He also adjusts for the most extreme hitters or pitchers parks, and then ranks the best Division 1 arms. (I’ve asked for his formula- I mean, I’m not sure I’d give it away if I were him, but I would love to see if a list like this might be possible for the Valley League.)
Two former Valley Leaguers made his top 100: Hunter Gregory (Charlottesville 2018), from Old Dominion, and Hunter Wolfe (Strasburg 2017), from Dayton. (Stats are through Wednesday, April 14)
Gregory, coming in at #61, is rocking it for ODU. He’s now 4-0, 1.96 in 36 2/3 innings, with a .185 opponent’s batting average, and 24 hits, 11 walks, and 51 strikeouts. He leads the Monarchs in basically every category at the moment.
Wolfe comes in tied at #88. He’s also having an excellent season, going 3-3, 2.77 in 48 2/3 innings, with 41 hits, 17 walks, and 63 K’s. Like Gregory, he leads the Flyers in most categories.
Congratulations to both!
