Former Front Royal Cardinal righthander Zach Mort (2016) has been named the Low-A East Pitcher of the Week!
Just recently moved down from High-A Wisconsin, Mort ripped through seven innings against Augusta on August 18, allowing only four hits, one earned run, didn’t walk anyone, and struck out 11 to earn the award.
Originally an 8th round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs in 2018, Mort was released from Chicago’s system, but signed on as a free agent with Milwaukee in January, 2021. At Wisconsin in 2021, Mort went 1-4, 7.13 in 64 1/3 innings, along with 22 walks and 56 K’s. His superb start last week was his first at the Low-A level in 2021.
In the VBL in 2016, Mort went 0-1, 6.00 in 12 innings, but showed good stuff, as he struck out 19 batters as well.
Congratulations, Zach!
