The 12th best starting pitcher in the 2021 Valley League season is Purcellville’s Joe Vogatsky, from JMU.

Vogatsky showed electric stuff almost from the beginning for the Cannons, running his fastball into the mid-90’s, and the results followed. In 39 2/3 summer innings, Vogatsky went 2-1, 3.18, with a .265 BAA, 1.335 WHIP, 3.2 BB/9, and 10.2 K/9. He led the league in innings pitched and strikeouts. He was named first team All-Valley, and fired a shutout inning in the All-Star game.

His best start was on June 27 against Harrisonburg, when he threw six shutout innings and allowed only three hits and one walk, while striking out 10 to earn the win. He was also named the Pitcher of the Week on July 4, after striking out eight in six innings against Charlottesville.

From Warrenton, Virginia, Vogatsky will return to JMU for his sophomore season. In 2021, he went 0-2, 9.82 in 18 1/3 innings, with eight walks and 16 K’s. He’s smart, too- he was named to the Dean’s List in the Spring of 2021, and the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll in both the Fall of 2020 and Spring of 2021.

I believe he opened some eyes this summer- watch for an increased role in 2022!
