The 3rd best reliever in the 2015 Valley League season is Front Royal’s Mario Morales, from Campbellsville! Mario went 2-2, 2.11, with 1 save, a 0.966 WHIP, 1.4 BB/9, and 7.8 K/9 in 38 1/3 innings pitched. He walked only 6 and struck out 33 over those 38 1/3 innings. He started 2 games in the regular season, and then started, and won, a game in the playoffs against Woodstock.
Mario really has been a nomad in his college career. Let’s see if we can piece this together. In 2012, Mario pitched for Arizona Western, a junior college. He went 7-2, 3.06 in 67 2/3 innings, along with 25 walks and 53 strikeouts. In 2014, he attended Mt. San Antonio Community College, and went 1-0, 0.60, with 5 saves, only 3 walks, and 40 strikeouts in 30 innings.
He joined the Campbellsville Tigers in 2015, and went 4-3, 2.33, with 3 walks and 52 strikeouts in 69 2/3 innings. He was named 2nd team All Mid-South Conference. For his senior year, he’s back with the Tigers. He’s also off to a good start, as he won the Mid-South Pitcher of the Week award on March 7th. His ERA currently leads the conference.
Great job, Mario!
