All game ones were played tonight, with a couple “surprising” outcomes:
- Charlottesville rode an outstanding relief performance by Hunter Gregory (4 shutout, no-hit innings and 5 K’s) to beat the Waynesboro Generals 4-2 in Charlottesville. The Tom Sox’s leadoff hitter, Alex Mardiney, was a standout at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in one- accounting for 75% of the Tom Sox runs. Tyler Bielamowicz drove in both General runs in the first inning with a single. The teams will play game 2 in Waynesboro tomorrow.
- The Covington Lumberjacks scored early and often to win, 12-9, and put the Harrisonburg Turks on the verge of elimination. The Jacks scored twice in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th innings, and added 4 in the 5th, thanks to the triumverate of Bennett Hostetler (3-5, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Tyler Hill (3-4, 3 runs, 3 RBIs, home run), and Christian Del Castillo (3-3, 1 run, 4 RBIs). The Turks made it a game with 6 runs in the 7th, thanks in large part to a Kyle Johnson grand slam, but fell short in the end. Jordyn Eglite earned the win with 6 effective innings, and Harrisonburg’s Joseph Mannelly was saddled with the loss. The teams play game 2 in Harrisonburg Monday night.
- The 4th-seeded Winchester Royals surprised the top seed Purcellville Cannons with 4 runs in the 7th inning and hung on through a wild 9th inning to win game 1, 7-4. Masen Prososki started the Royals’ 7th inning 2-out rally with a triple, and after Trenton Burgreen and Zion Pettigrew singled, Raymond Gil brought them home with a 3-run home run. Down 7-1 lead with 3 outs to go, the Cannons stormed back with their own 2-out rally, scoring 3 runs and loading the bases before reliever Jake Posey struck out T.K. McWhertor to end the threat. Dylan Gentry received the win for the Royals while Parker Dyson got the loss. The teams play in Winchester Monday night for game 2.
- The 3rd -seeded New Market Rebels continued their torrid streak with a win in game 1, 11-5, over the 2nd-seeded Front Royal Cardinals. The Rebs scored 4 times in both the 3rd inning (Kobe Lopez RBI single, Oraj Anu bases-clearing, 3-RBI double) and 8th inning (Adan Fernandez RBI single, Kobe Lopez bases-loaded walk, Andrew Eyster sacrifice fly, and error on an Oraj Anu grounder) to grab the advantage over the Cards. Five Rebels had 2 hits, as the team totalled 12. Spencer Packard led Front Royal by going 4-5 in the leadoff spot, with a double, 2 runs, 2 RBIs, and walk, and Brady Ballstadt added three hits while Michael Green added 2 hits and 3 walks. Chase Anderson got the win while Logan Morrison was given the loss. The teams travel to New Market for game 2 tomorrow.
