Our 10th best starter in the Valley League, Gabriel Ponce, from San Diego, added some hardware at the end of the season, as he officially won the 2018 ERA title with an outstanding mark of 2.26. He pitched quite a few innings for the Cardinals this summer:
FR | ERA | W | L | G | GS | IP | H | R | ER | BB | K | BAVG | WHIP | BB/9 | K/9 |
2018 | 2.26 | 3 | 0 | 9 | 7 | 39.7 | 27 | 15 | 10 | 22 | 32 | 0.189 | 1.234 | 5.0 | 7.3 |
For pitchers on this list, he finished 4th in ERA (because 3 other pitchers didn’t have enough innings to qualify), 5th in batting average against, and 3rd in innings pitched. He was ATVL’s Pitcher of the Day once, and was named first team All-Valley (obviously at starting pitcher).
He two most outstanding starts:
- July 20th at Woodstock; in this one he threw 7 shutout innings while allowing 2 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 2.
- July 12th vs Staunton; in 6 innings he allowed 4 hits, 1 unearned run, 2 walks, and struck out 2.
Yet another sophomore on this list, Gabriel pitched quite a bit more in college in 2018 than some of the other pitchers on this list:
SD | ERA | W | L | G | GS | IP | H | R | ER | BB | K | WHIP | BB/9 | K/9 |
2018 | 5.68 | 3 | 2 | 16 | 3 | 38.0 | 40 | 28 | 24 | 21 | 43 | 1.605 | 5.0 | 10.2 |
Watch for the 6-foot-2 righthander to have a excellent 2019 season!
