Fred Villarreal Houston 2018

Back-to-back Waynesboro Generals and Houston Cougars!

Our 4th best starter in the 2018 Valley League season is the 6-foot, 190 pound junior righthander Fred Villarreal!

Fred was outstanding in his 6 games for Waynesboro:

Way ERA W L G GS IP H R ER BB K BAVG WHIP BB/9 K/9
2018 2.66 1 2 6 3 27.0 22 9 8 5 34 0.222 1.000 1.7 11.3
Play 2.84 0 1 1 1 6.3 10 3 2 1 5 0.357 1.746 1.4 7.1

Of pitchers on this list, Fred finished 9th in ERA, tied for 8th in strikeouts, tied for 4th in WHIP, 3rd in BB/9, and 3rd in K/9. His 5/34 BB/K totals are particularly impressive. His best start was on July 20th against Charlottesville, when he went 9 innings and allowed 4 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), 2 walks, and struck out 10. It was the 2nd best start all summer according to game score. He also threw two shutout innings at Prospect Showcase with three strikeouts.

Fred received quite a bit of attention after the season, too. He was named first team All-Valley, and made his way onto all three postseason top prospect lists. He was 4th on the ATVL list, 3rd on Baseball America’s, and 8th on Perfect Game’s. This young man looks like he has a bright future.

His stats thus far for Houston:

Hous ERA W L G GS IP H R ER BB K WHIP BB/9 K/9
2017 4.25 1 2 14 3 42.0 44 24 20 8 14 1.238 1.7 3.0
2018 4.43 1 2 12 1 22.0 26 16 11 11 11 1.682 4.5 4.5

(He also saved 2 games in 2017.)

Congratulations on your excellent summer, Fred!
