In a rare Thursday college baseball game, former Valley Leaguers Connor Gillispie (Charlottesville 2017) and Ben Dum (Strasburg 2016-17) were dynamite on the mound for VCU against Wofford, while Zac Ching (Charlottesville 2018) and Hogan Brown (Strasburg 2018) were standouts at the plate.
Gillispie, named pre-season All-Atlantic 10 by Collegiate Baseball, started the game on the bump, and fired 4 shutout, no-hit innings, walking two and striking out 8. After receiving the win for this one, he’s now 1-0, 2.57 in 7 innings pitched, with 3 hits, 2 walks, and 12 strikeouts.
Dum, a top starter in the VBL (according to ATVL) in both 2016 (#2) and 2017 (#4), came in the game in relief of Gillispie, and threw 3 shutout innings, allowing 1 hit, 1 walk, and struck out 5. Ben had a tough outing in his first appearance, but he’s now 0-1, 10.12, with 8 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings pitched.
Ching hit his first home run of the season, going 3-6, with a run and 3 RBIs. He’s hitting 381/435/571 in 21 at-bats, with 4 runs and 6 RBIs so far.
Brown, also pre-season All-Atlantic 10, went 2-5, with a run, 2 RBIs, and his first home run. He’s hitting a very similar 381/409/524 in 21 at-bats, with 4 runs and 4 RBIs.
Congrats to all four! The Rams are playing Radford at noon today.
