Five games were played yesterday, with the odd Staunton doubleheader… against two different teams. (And they won both. Is that still a “sweep?” If two different teams are beaten? Anyway.) Waynesboro went the old-fashioned way for their sweep- winning two games against the same team.
By the way, I am already working on the 2019 Valley League Annual, to be available later this year- perhaps November. More information coming soon!

Hitter of the Day
I’m doing something unconventional this morning, and giving the hitter of the day award to what a player did over two games yesterday… and that’s Staunton’s Andrew Czech, from Walsh. Andrew went a combined 3-7 against New Market and Woodstock, with a run, hit-by-pitch, a grand slam, and seven RBIs. The slam tied game one against New Market in the 7th inning, and the Braves went on to win. Czech is hitting .343/.441/.642 in 134 at-bts this summer, with 13 doubles, nine home runs, and a whopping 47 RBIs. He has at least one RBI in seven of his last ten games, and four of the last five. His total is already tied for 11th best in the league since the 2004 season. He is tied for the league lead in home runs, and leads in RBIs by far. I don’t know if Andrew will win the league MVP, but he’s a lock for the top three for sure.

Pitcher of the Day
The pitcher of the day also comes from the Staunton Braves- it’s Eric O’Brien, from Shepherd, who pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings of relief in game one. He allowed four hits, no walks, and struck out three to earn the win. O’Brien is now 2-2, 4.58, with 12 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings.. but he is currently on a 10 2/3 inning streak of not allowing an earned run.
