Let’s take a quick look around the minor leagues for some updates….
- Is it a coincidence that Nate Pearson (Staunton 2016) was called up to Triple-A Buffalo the same day ATVL wrote about how awesome a prospect he is? Maybe, maybe not. But it’s true- after 16 starts in Double-A New Hampshire, Mr. Pearson is now just one step away from the major leagues.
- Matt Martin (Strasburg 2018) was signed by Seattle just a few days ago as an undrafted free agent (out of Florida Southern). After appearing in 11 games for Everett in the Northwest League, Martin was bumped up a level to West Virginia in the South Atlantic League. He started his first game there on Saturday, and all he did was throw six shutout innings, while allowing two hits, one walk, and striking out four. In his combined games at the two levels, he’s 4-2, 3.72, with a 1.22 WHIP in 46 innings. In his time at Strasburg, Matt showed a low-90’s fastball and good secondary stuff.
- The second Matt to focus on today is Matt Hartman (Harrisonburg 2015), who was signed by the Atlanta Braves as an undrafted free agent in 2018. On Saturday, Hartman had an excellent start for the Florida Fire Frogs in the Florida State League, going seven shutout innings while allowing three hits, one walk, and striking out five. Hartman has now pitched 92 innings across two levels in 2019, going 4-7, 3.82, with a 1.18 WHIP.
