As promised, I’m scouring the pages (sites?) of baseball previews to find former Valley Leaguers who are poised for big college seasons this spring (as snow is in today’s forecast in the Valley).
Today, we’ll start with Baseball America naming former Harrisonburg Turk Mason Studstill (2017) the Atlantic Sun preseason Pitcher of the Year!
BA right away drops a “most accomplished in the Atlantic Sun” on Studstill, as he’s gone 8-2, 2.30, with 131 strikeouts in 109 2/3 innings the last two seasons at Florida Gulf Coast. The senior righthander can run his fastball up there at 92-94 mph, and can touch 95. He has been drafted once before, in 2016 after high school, and my guess is he’ll be drafted again in 2021.
Studstill spent one season at Miami, in 2017, and after appearing in one game, headed to the Shenandoah Valley to pitch for the Turks. In six starts that summer, he went 4-0, 2.50, with a 1.278 WHIP, 4.8 BB/9, and 7.8 K/9 in 36 innings. He was ATVL’s 6th best starter in the league that year.
After one year at junior-college Eastern Florida State where he went 1-4, 5.81 in 57 1/3 innings, Studstill transferred to FGC, where obviously he has settled in and become one of the best pitchers in the Atlantic Sun.
Congratulations!
