The 6th best starting pitcher in the 2017 Valley League season is Harrisonburg’s Mason Studstill!
Mason was pretty clearly the best Turk starter in 2017. Let’s take a look at his VBL stats:
Har | ERA | W | L | G | GS | IP | H | R | ER | BB | K | BAVG | WIP | BB/9 | K/9 |
2017 | 2.50 | 4 | 0 | 6 | 6 | 36.0 | 27 | 12 | 10 | 19 | 31 | 0.216 | 1.278 | 4.8 | 7.8 |
Of pitchers considered for this list, Mason finished 4th in ERA, 3rd in batting average against, 7th in WHIP, 9th in K’s, and tied for 6th in K/9. His best start was on June 23rd against Staunton, when he threw 8 innings, allowing 6 hits, 1 earned run, 3 walks, and striking out 8. He earned a game score of 71 for that one. He was named 2nd team All-Valley as well.
Mason spent 2017 at Miami, but has transferred to Eastern Florida State, a junior college in Melbourne, Florida. He threw only one inning for the Hurricanes. He was also drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 22nd round of the 2016 draft, but did not sign. I would not be surprised if Mason gets some major ink before the draft next June, like Nate Pearson (Staunton) did for the ’17 draft.
Congrats on your excellent summer, Mason!
