Our #4 starter only started three games this summer, but they were all good ones.

Greg Martinez, a 6-foot-3 righthander from Louisiana Tech, completed 19 innings this summer, going 2-0, 1.89, with a .208 BAA, 0.895 WHIP, 0.9 BB/9, and 10.9 K/9. Of pitchers on this list, he finished third in ERA, tied for ninth in BAA, fourth in WHIP, tied for second in BB/9, and tied for seventh in K/9.

Two of his three starts are definitely worth mentioning here. On June 18 against Front Royal, Martinez threw seven complete innings, allowing six hits and one run, but he didn’t walk anyone and he struck out six. The second one was on June 26 against Strasburg, in which he threw six innings, allowing two hits, one run, two walks, and striking out eight. He earned the win against Front Royal, but not against Strasburg (the Express won that one, 4-1).

As a freshman at La Tech in 2020, Martinez went 1-1, 3.09 in 11 2/3 innings. In 2021, he pitched a bit more, going 4-1, 7.99 in 32 2/3 innings, with 14 walks and 35 K’s. However, he was named to Conference USA’s All-Tournament team after allowing only one earned run in eight innings against Southern Miss in the conference playoffs. That success certainly sent Martinez into the summer on a positive note, and he followed through with three solid starts for New Market.
