JMU travelled to Winthrop to take on he Eagles yesterday afternoon, and a former Valley Leaguer had one of the best pitching performances of the young season so far- but it wasn’t a Duke, it was Garrett Gainey, who pitched in Winchester in 2021.

The 6-foot-1 lefty dominated JMU over 7 1/3 shutout innings, allowing only three hits and no walks while striking out seven. Gainey is now 2-0, 4.24 in 29 2/3 innings, with only four walks and 27 strikeouts. For the Royals in the summer, Gainey went 2-1, 4.10 in nine appearances out of the bullpen, with 25 K’s in 15 1/3 innings. He pitched in the All-Star game, and also struck out seven batters in 4 1/3 playoff innings.

Pitching so well against a good offense like JMU will grab some attention- well done!
